Frequently asked questions
Technology Map
What is the Technology Map?
The Technology Map is a resource consisting of roughly 200 types of available technologies that are accessible through branching needs-based categories. By beginning with the broad and potential needs of your organization, this interactive website is personalized for you in order to align our values around your needs. To see the full picture of the Map, we have created a mind map. To access this mind map, click on “Technology Map” on the left navigation page.
Why is the map useful?
We know that personal technology consultations are time-consuming and can be expensive for a nonprofit. Access to these technologies can help to bridge the gap to have technology work for you. Through a needs-based approach, you’ll be able to hone in on all of the potential tools and applications at your disposal so that you may make an informed decision when selecting the essential tools to support your mission.
How will this work with my organization/goals?
The UoT is designed as a quick self-help guide for small to mid-size organizations to explore their options before seeking time-consuming and—often expensive—professional consultation. The Map portion is designed so that it’s easy to navigate through sustainable technology solutions.
How do you use the map?
- Starting on the Home page, choose one of the five categories (what we call “main categories”) that you want to explore.
- Click and scroll through the page where the category branches off into mini “sub-categories” to choose from (we call those boxes “cards”).
- Keep clicking through the cards until you eventually end up with potential software solutions that will take you to an alternate site (Alternativeto.net) that compiles the most relevant and useful software for your needs.
- If you are not satisfied with your result, please consult with a member of the Everett Program here or click the ← button on your browser to go back to where you left off.
How was this map created?
Beginning as a pen & paper mind map for exploring technology solutions through a needs-based approach. UoT has evolved to become a multi-year student lead project supported by, and created for the Everett Program. Transitioning to a web-application based map will ideally provide a more streamlined and accessible approach to our consultation.
How do I receive more personal assistance?
In addition to bridging the technology gap, the Universe of Technology also offers Everett Program’s Organizational Assessment & Partnership Consultations. We are seeking support and feedback from the nonprofit communities as we strive to serve your needs.
Universe of Technology
What is the Universe of Technology?
The Universe of Technology (UoT) is a web application based on the original organizational needs map created by Everett Program alumni Thomas Gelder and Katie Roper. The goal of the original pen & paper map was to aid organizations in exploring potential solutions to issues they face. By converting the UoT from a pen & paper design into an interactive web application over 6 years, we have expanded the Map by 300% to include over 200 types of technology softwares to expand access to the public and make the entire process more streamlined.
Why is the universe of technology important?
Lacking access to certain technologies or full-time tech personnel can limit the innovative potential of reaching their desired goal(s). The UoT is designed to empower organizations by providing a comprehensive guide with many different subcategories to explore potential solutions unique to your needs.
What is human-centered design?
A human-centered design simply means that the user comes first. The UoT was intentionally designed for and with the actual users using relevant data, prototypes, and iterative designs. In short, we want every aspect of our website to be modified in response to what works best for you as the user.
What does "UoT" Mean?
The name “Universe of Technology” (UoT) implies that technology is a vast universe awaiting users to explore and discover their own solutions. With minimal guidance from the UoT team, a user can successfully navigate, discover, and utilize viable technology without feeling lost in a galaxy of never-ending software solutions.
What is the Digital Divide?
The digital divide (or technology gap) is a gap in access or understanding of technology that prevents an individual or organization from benefiting as a whole. A 2017 survey conducted by NetChange of 80 nonprofit “digital engagement respondents” discovered that “half of respondents’ organizations continue to miss major digital opportunities” and “three quarters of digital teams have been restructured once or more in the past 3 years, yet only 10% find their structure to be highly effective.”
How do I contact the "universe of technology" team?
You can contact both the current and alumni UoT members through our website, or the Everett Program’s website.
